SIDEWAYS starring Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Sandra Oh, and Virginia Madsen
“Intelligent, funny and moving.
“By far the year’s best American movie.
How much trouble can an unsuccessful writer and depressed middle school English teacher get into during a road trip through the Santa Ynez Valley wine country? Plenty! For one night only, The Nevada City Film Festival and Miners Foundry Cultural Center present the Award winning film “Sideways”, plus a hearty and delicious dinner featuring California cuisine by A Family Affair, 5 tastings of local wines, and live jazz music.
“Sideways” will screen in the historic Osborn and Woods hall at the Miners Foundry Cultural Center where state of the art projection and sound will be brought in for the audience’s viewing pleasure. Following the film, enjoy five tastings from vintage cabs and buttery chardonnays by local award-winning foothill wineries. A delicious and hearty meal prepared by A Family Affair will be served in the beautiful Stone Hall. The Sierra Jazz Society will provide a sonic back drop of live jazz music.
Part of the “Food & Film Series”, “Sideways” is about two men reaching middle age without much to show for it. They embark on a week long road trip to explore California’s wine country while ultimately searching for their identities. “Sideways” stars Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Sandra Oh, and Virginia Madsen. A surprise hit, “Sideways” became popular in the US and internationally. Santa Ynez Valley, where much of the film is set, attracted increased tourism.
Throughout the film, Giamatti’s character Miles speaks fondly of the red wine varietal Pinot Noir, while denigrating Merlot. Following the film’s U.S. release in October 2004, Pinot Noir sales increased 16% in the Western United States while Merlot sales dropped 2%, possibly due to Miles’ disparaging remarks about the varietal in the film.
Make it a weekend!
